We all know that water is essential to life. Did you know that without water, the human body can only survive for about three days? The life-sustaining chemical substance that fuses two hydrogen atoms with a single oxygen atom is essential to the healthy functions of the body and skin alike.

How much water should I drink?

To remain sufficiently hydrated, experts recommend drinking between a half ounce and an ounce of water per day for each pound you weigh. At 150 lbs, that means between 75-150 ounces of water each and every day.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to work properly.” The Clinic goes on to state that water:

  • Gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements
  • Keeps your temperature normal
  • Lubricates and cushions joints
  • Protects sensitive tissues

Those sensitive tissues include your skin!

How can you tell if you are dehydrated?

Your skin is perhaps the greatest indicator that you may be dehydrated. Dehydration in skin tissues can result in the visible formation of fine surface lines on the face, splotchiness, irritation, redness and sensitivity.

What’s the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

You can be excused for confusing the two. Skincare marketers don’t traditionally do a great job of describing the causes and differences of dry skin and dehydrated skin. To put it simply, “dry” is a skin type and “dehydrated” is a skin condition. Dry skin lacks oil-based moisture, or lipids. Dehydrated skin lacks water.

How do you fix dehydrated skin?

The good news is that dehydrated skin is a temporary condition easily solved by assuring that your skin has sufficient water content to maintain healthy functions throughout the day.

Consider these three solutions.

  1. Drink more water throughout the day, especially during the dry, colder months. Again, a good rule is to drink an ounce of water for every pound of body weight.
  2. Use a humectant serum infused with one of the most potent water-binding molecules: Hyaluronic Acid (or Sodium Hyaluronate). The common humectant, found in the best face creams and serums, acts like a magnet to hold water in the skin and sustain hydration levels over time.

The Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Hyaluronate Serum contains 5% Seaweed Hyaluronate Blend to pull moisture into the skin.

  1. Use an occlusive face balm, cream or serum rich in lipids to prevent water loss through the skin barrier.

Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Hyaluronate Serum is powered by 5% Triple Lipid Complex, a patented lipid multiplier that helps replenish skin barrier lipids such as ceramides and fatty acids to fortify the skin barrier against moisture loss.

Triple Lipid-Hyaluronate Serum is clinically proven to plump, volumize and provide a moisture surge to your skin and is FREE FROM fragrance, parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, phthalates, silicones, lanolin, petrolatum, propylene glycol, PEGs, gluten and more. Read our full no list here.

How do you fix dry skin?

If your skin is dry, whether year-round or seasonally as in colder climates, your best weapon is to employ a moisturizer that helps replenish lipids in the skin barrier (or moisture barrier). This lipid layer is composed of fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol – all natural fat substances that play an important role in skin health. Although research regarding lipids is an emerging area of skin research, studies suggest optimal levels of ceramides in human skin to be approximately 50% of the skin’s lipid layer, cholesterol 25%, and other fatty acids at about 10-15%.

Dry skin tends to lack sufficient levels of these vital skin lipids, with depletion of lipids accelerating as we age. To counter loss of lipids, look for a face cream that’s proven to replenish skin lipids like fatty acids and ceramides.

Studies have shown that using a face cream with skin-similar lipids that mimic the skin barrier’s own lipids is the most effective way to replenish lipids and prevent dryness.

As part of a Barrier+ three-step regimen, the Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream is a lipid filler rich in vital lipids, peptides and sodium hyaluronate and is clinically proven to help restore depleted ceramides and fatty acids and support barrier function by reversing lipid depletion.

In fact, a Barrier+ regimen is clinically proven to replenish skin lipids by 23.6% in 28 days. That's nearly 1% per day!*

Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream is FREE FROM fragrance, parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, phthalates, silicones, lanolin, petrolatum, propylene glycol, PEGs, gluten and more. Read our full no list here.
